GREENSBORO, N.C. — Marshall softball won the first game of the Spartan Classic 6-1 against Quinnipiac, in a tournament game held at the UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

Senior Marshall pitcher Andi Williamson matched her career and Marshall record with 14 strikeouts.

She set that mark on March 31, 2012 against Conference USA’s UTEP.

Williamson only allowed two hits throughout the entire game, and both were after the fifth inning, and the only run came in the seventh.

Senior Ashley Gue scored MU’s first run after a walk, when senior third baseman Jazmine Valle's doubled to right center.

Freshman catcher Katalin Lucas (2-for-2) reached first on a walk in the second.

Senior first baseman Alysia Hively (1-for-3) followed with a single through the right side, and was run for.

Pinch runner Emileigh Cooper went to second, and Lucas went home, a double steal leading to a 2-0 MU lead.

In the fourth, senior second baseman Bri Anna Hope (1-for-3) doubled to left center with one out and Lucas singled up the middle to give MU a 3-0 lead.

Valle (2-for-4) hit a lead-off home run in the sixth, then Lucas singled and scored on a two-run homer by junior Savanah Webster to put the Herd up 6-0.

In the seventh, Quinnipiac’s Alex Alba singled through left field with one out, bringing home Bridget Figmic (who walked) for the only run Williamson allowed.

Then the senior closed the game with two more strikeouts for 14.

Marshall's Kaelynn Greene (1-for-3, stolen base) and Alexandra Bayne (1-for-3) also contributed to the nine hits the Herd had in the win.

Williamson is now 4-6 on the season.

Marshall is 4-7 leading into tomorrow's double-header against the home Spartans of UNC Greensboro and against the Drexel Dragons.
