Straily pitches great in first start; Marshall baseball all-time list of major league and minor league players

HUNTINGTON - On Friday, Aug. 3, former Marshall University baseball pitcher Dan Straily got his first start in Major League baseball when he faced the Toronto Blue Jays for the Oakland A's in California in game two of a four-game set between the Blue Jays and the Athletics.
NOTE: STRAILY PITCHES SIX INNINGS IN FIRST START, ALLOWING ONE RUN (EARNED) ON FIVE HITS, WALKING JUST ONE AND STRIKING OUT FIVE (RUNNING TOTAL TO 180 FOR THE YEAR IN AA-AAA-MLB) AS A's GIVE HIM A 4-1 LEAD AFTER SIX IN THE BOOKS. A's reliever Ryan Cooks gives up a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth to cost Straily the win but still an impressive outing for Straily's first game in majors.
Straily was drafted by the A's after the 2009 season with the Herd, after helping pitch Marshall to a runner-up finish in the 2008 Conference USA Tournament at Tulane University in New Orleans.
In two seasons at Marshall after transferring from Western Oregon, Straily was 9-7 with a 4.27 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 153.2 innings.
This year, he leads all players in professional baseball with 175 strikeouts, coming at AA Midland in the Texas League and AAA Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League.
He is the first Marshall player to play in Major League Baseball since Rick Reed retired with the Minnesota Twins after the 2003 season, playing 15 years of pro ball.
Since 1930, when Johnny Watson played four games for the Detroit Tigers, Straily joins Joe Goddard (12 games with the San Diego Padres in 1972), Kansas City Royals and Marshall Hall of Fame member Jeff Montgomery (13 seasons of relief, with 304 saves with the Royals) and Reed as Marshall's only players to appear in MLB games - although there are a number of players who played in the majors before that and many, many more to have played and are currently playing for various minor league teams.
Here is an all-time list of players who have played professional baseball after playing or coaching baseball (or even football) at Marshall University since 1904. Marshall was Marshall College from 1867-1961, and was a state Normal school from 1867-1920, awarding two-year degrees for teaching secondary education. Marshall also had a Lab School where it trained teachers, so some of its student-athletes prior to 1920 could even be high school students from the lab housed in Jenkins Hall:
