Dee Reed of "Lex & Terry" radio show gets his “Herd” on

HUNTINGTON - The national radio morning show, Lex & Terry (heard in Huntington, W.Va. on The Planet, 92.7 FM and 98.5 FM), got on board with the Marshall Thundering Herd this morning when a very special guest joined the morning show.
Former Marshall and NFL quarterback Chad Pennington called into Friday’s show to recruit a member of the cast to follow the Herd football program.
Develle “Dee” Reed, a production member of Lex & Terry on the United Stations Radio Network and on XM 165, recently let listeners know he was giving up on his beloved Miami, Fla. Hurricanes and looking for a new team to follow.
He was disappointed in the Hurricanes of the past few seasons, including a fall from national prominence, NCAA-type problems with boosters and a lack of the success the Hurricanes were known for in the 1980s and 1990s.
Reed let listeners know he was going to accept recruiting calls from fans of other Division I, FBS schools - the top level of NCAA football - and would make a final decision when he returned from vacation in two weeks.
Pennington, who previously played for both the New York Jets and for Miami’s professional football team, the Dolphins, called this morning on behalf of the Marshall Thundering Herd, and pitched being a member of the Herd.
He informed Reed he had a lifetime contract to sign if he joined Herd Nation, a membership that would include Marshall gear and other goodies for Reed.
Being a morning radio show, and as a show who often pranks listeners and others, Lex & Terry demanded Pennington prove he was who they though he was, and got the former quarterback to send in a picture of himself, holding up four fingers and sticking out his tongue — something that could not be a quickly photo shopped picture.
Pennington immediately responded with a picture as requested and Reed decided to skip waiting and throw his support to the Thundering Herd.
As hosts Lex Staley and Terry Jaymes pointed out to Reed on the air, no other D-I school had stepped up to the plate to have an actual representative of their school call and pitch it, as Marshall and Pennington did.
Pennington was contacted by Marshall’s Assistant Director of Alummi Marketing/Membership Robert Ellis and former Herd student-athlete and fan, Josh Perkey, from Huntington to make the now successful pitch of Marshall to Reed.
Pennington is currently assisting Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick — with the additional help of former NBA coach and current assistant coach with the USA Olympic team, Mike D’Antonio, a Marshall point guard in the 1970s — with the “Vision Campaign,” attempting to raise more than $20 million to fund the building the new Marshall Veteran’s Memorial Soccer Complex and Indoor Practice Facility.
Lex & Terry air live from 6-11 a.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, on The Planet 92.7 FM and 98.5 FM and 30 other stations around the nation.
