HUNTINGTON – As Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick continues to hit the road for the 2013 Big Green Coaches’ Tour stops, he has plenty of good news to spread.

Hamrick returned from the Conference USA spring meetings in Destin, Fla., last week, and the Thundering Herd spring includes NCAA tournament or championships participation in softball, men’s golf and track and field.

And while the present has been plenty good, the future looks rosy to the fourth-year Herd AD, too. In a Thursday interview in his Shewey Building office, Hamrick discussed what’s ahead in football, soccer and C-USA.

As a prelude to his annual print version of his college football annual, Phil Steele put Marshall at No. 38 in his top 40 earlier this week – just ahead of nos. 39-40 Kansas State and North Carolina, and just behind Nos. 35-37 Tulsa, Baylor and BYU, respectively.

Steele also forecast an improved Herd defense to play “as much as 2 TDs better” than last year’s defense, and gave Coach Doc Holliday’s club “the elite designation of my No. 1 Most Improved Team in the country.”

“That’s great for us,” Hamrick said. “Phil Steele and his people really do their homework, and usually have a pretty good handle on what’s going to happen. We’re really looking forward to the season. You can just feel the momentum building.”

Baseball beaten by Rice, and Kerns ready for day three at NCAA Regional in Columbus, Ohio

No. 20 Rice hands Marshall a 13-0 baseball loss

HOUSTON, Texas — A relentless attack by the 20th-ranked Owls of Rice was the story in game two of the Conference USA series at Reckling Park on Friday, as the Thundering Herd baseball team fell 13-0.

The loss, combined with a UAB win at Tulane on Friday night, means the Herd needs a win behind ace Aaron Blair against the nationally ranked Owls, combined with a loss by the Blazers to the Green Wave to be one of the eight teams to advance to the C-USA Tournament, also at Rice this coming week.

UAB and Marshall are tied for eighth in the nine-team Conference USA, at 6-17 in league play, but the Blazers have the tie-breaker with MU after they won 2-of-3 games against the Herd in the regular season.

Rice (26-17, 14-9 C-USA) won the series and put itself in position to win the league’s regular season outright, while Marshall fell to 20-33 overall with the loss.

Kerns tied for 32nd after day one of NCAA Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following the first round of the NCAA Columbus Regional at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, senior men’s golfer Nathan Kerns is tied for 32nd after shooting a 75 (+4).

“I felt a bit nervous and shaky for the first couple holes, but I settled in nicely with a couple of birdies,” Kerns said.

“I never really got in a rhythm with the golf swing and hit it everywhere today. As for my position, I feel confident going into the next 36 holes. I can’t play any worse.”

The Ironton, Ohio native opened the round with bogeys on holes one and two, but responded with two straight birdies, including a four on the front nine par-5.

Kerns was able to shoot another birdie on a par-5 hole No. 12, but followed with three bogeys in a row.

Softball meets Kentucky in Lexington Regional Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Written by WOODY WOODRUM, Herd Insider Publisher on . Posted in Marshall Headlines

HUNTINGTON — Marshall softball is celebrating its 20th season since the program that was around for just two season in 1979-80, then restarted in 1993, and has won its first Conference USA title -- just the second league championship (Southern, 1995) in the history of the program.

Now, the first NCAA Tournament for Marshall softball (35-20) will be a short drive for many Herd fans as MU drew the Lexington, Ky. Regional with the No. 12-seeded Wildcats (38-18) of the SEC hosting the Herd in a rematch of a regular season, one-run game at the UK Softball Complex and John Cropp Stadium.

The game is set for Friday night at 7:30 p.m., with the other teams in that bracket including the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Virginia Tech (35-19) and the Big East Conference’s Notre Dame (43-13).

Marshall is the only conference champion in the regional, as UK, Tech and Notre Dame are all at-large selections.

The Wildcats are the top seed for the Lexington Regional, the Fighting Irish second and the Hokies the third with the Herd the fourth-seed in the region.

UK is hosting a NCAA Regional for the first time in program history.

The NCAA Regionals are double-elimination first round tournaments.

Should the Herd advance through the Wildcats, Hokies and Fighting Irish, they would play in the Super Regionals next against the winner of the Tempe, Ariz. Regional (No. 5-seed Arizona State, Georgia, San Diego State and San Jose State).

All-time, Marshall is 3-8 against Kentucky since first meeting back in 1997.
