Buckeyes Blow Out Herd, Holliday In Opener, 45-7

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Famed gunfighter and gambler John "Doc" Holiday helped Wyatt Earp out of many a shootouts during their times in the "Wild West" of over 100 years ago, especially in the famous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona.
In that fight, Wyatt, Morgan and Virgil Earp, along with Doc Holliday, fought Frank and Tom McLaury, Billy Claiborne and Ike and Billy Clanton. Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne escaped unharmed but both McLaurys and Billy Clanton were shot down by Doc and Wyatt.
Unfortunately, for John "Doc" Holliday in his first game as the Marshall Thundering Herd football head coach, this time he had no Earps, not much offense, mistakes aplenty while the guys across the way had a quarterback who looked very much like a gunslinger who might just be the Heisman Trophy candidate many national pundits have made him.
Playing the role of the winning cowboys in this shootout with Holliday's Herd, the No. 2 Ohio State piled up 529 yards of offense and held the Herd without an offensive touchdown as the Buckeyes shot out to a 35-7 halftime lead on the way to a convincing 45-7 season-opening victory over Marshall on Thursday evening at "The Horseshoe," better known as Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
105,040 were in attendance at Ohio Stadium for the opener. Another 4,000-plus crowded into Huntington, W.Va.'s Harris Riverfront Amphitheater to watch a free screening of the game on the Big Ten Network on a 273-square foot LED television screen, sponsored by the Big Sandy Super Stores Arena and Kindred Communications, including Marshall flagship stations The Dawg, 93.7 FM and SuperTalk 94.1 FM and AM 930.

HUNTINGTON - After waiting since last spring, during a rainy, wet Green-White Game that drew the second-biggest crowd in Marshall history...
Since last December, when a 6-6 Marshall team stormed back into Michigan and walked out with a bowl win for the fourth time in five games there...
For all the days of sitting watching practice through the spring and August...
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!
The wait is over, Herd fans. Tonight, September 2, 2010 at 7:30 p.m., the Doc Holliday era begins with a bang, as the Herd travels to Columbus, Ohio for the second-time ever to face the Ohio State Buckeyes in football at "The Horseshoe," Ohio Stadium.
The Thundering Herd, coming off its first winning season since 2003 and first bowl win since 2002, will travel to take on the No. 2 team in the nation, with Heisman Trophy candidate (front-runner?) Terrell Pryor at quarterback and another power-packed team for Buckeye head coach Jim Tressel.

Marshall Players Cut From Rosters; McClellan On Ravens Practice Squad

HUNTINGTON - Marshall has many former players involved in professional football at all levels, from the National Football League to a local semi-pro team in Kenova, W.Va.
Here is the Herd Insider update on where they stand in their post-Marshall careers.
Over the Labor Day weekend, Daniel Baldridge (Jacksonville), Ashton Hall (Indianapolis) and Albert McClellan (Baltimore) all were cut from their respective teams, joining Cody Slate (Kansas City) who was cut earlier last week.
The good news came for McClellan when the Ravens resigned him to the Developmental Roster, or practice squad. He will practice during the week with the team, signing for the standard $80,000 contract for the linebacker from Marshall.
According to Pro Player Solutions, the agency that represents Byron Leftwich, the veteran quarterback suffered a torn MCL during the Steelers’ preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night. It is likely Leftwich will be out 2-4 weeks.
That means Dennis Dixon will start at quarterback for the Steelers, with 16-year vet Charlie Batch backing him up. Ben Roethlisberger had his suspension reduced from six to four weeks, meaning he will return for the Cleveland game. He cannot practice with the team.
