HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Thundering Herd women’s basketball coach Royce Chadwick announced his second signing of the week, inking 5-5 point guard Dorina Barrett to a National Letter of Intent to play at Marshall starting next season.
Barrett is a native of Detroit, Mich. where she attended Pershing High School. Herd center Tynikki Crook, who will be a senior next season, also attended Pershing. Barrett helped lead the Panthers to the State Class A semi-finals.
“Dorina is a natural basketball player. She adds a confidence to a team that you just can’t teach,” Chadwick said. “Every facet of her game is not just good but spectacularly good. She makes everyone on the floor better. Dorina has star potential.”
Barrett was named an All-City Player from 2008 through 2010 while garnering All-State honors as a senior. As a sophomore in 2008, she led the Doughgirls to the City Championship game for the first time.

HUNTINGTON - Marshall University new head basketball coach Tom Herrion has been searching high and low for quality basketball players for the Thundering Herd since being hired.
This time, however, the top suspect on his list was named Holmes - no, not Sherlock - but Dante Holmes of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.
Holmes is first commitment since accepting the Marshall job in April. Herrion came to Marshall from the University of Pittsburgh, where he had been a top recruiter.
Holmes was being recruited by teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Atlantic-10 Conference, the Big East and Conference USA, with phone calls from other top leagues.
He is rated three stars by Rivals.com, a recruiting website.

ATLANTIC LB JEPHETE MATILUS COMMITS TO MARSHALL
Linebacker Jephete Matilus has committed to play for Marshall for the 2011 signing day.
At this point in the process, when players still have more than nine months to change their minds, it is hard to say how much this matters. Atlantic head coach Chris Bean told the Palm Beach Post said he is unsure how solid Matilus’ decision is.
“I don’t know, to be honest with you, but he did commit,” Bean said. “He gave them a verbal.”
If it holds up, this would be a continuation of a great run by Marshall in Palm Beach County newspaper in Florida. The Thundering Herd picked up six county players last season, including two of the area’s top 20 recruits.
Nebraska was one of the first schools in on Matilus (6-0, 220, No. 11 on The Big Board) and several other BCS programs have shown strong interest in him. Rivals.com reported that he has offers from Illinois and Western Kentucky, as well.
As a junior, Matilus had 33 tackles and six sacks.
