Word on the HERD: Capital Classic a battle of more than words

Written by JACK BOGACZYK, HI Editor on . Posted in Basketball

HUNTINGTON – Some things never change.

So, while the men’s Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic basketball date has been moved up about seven weeks from what has been the recent norm, and poor shooting and excessive foul-whistling in the Charleston Civic Center may come and go, one thing stays the same.

“You’d better be ready to play,” Marshall center Nigel Spikes said. “You don’t find games like this too often.”

The annual West Virginia-Marshall game tips off Wednesday night at 7:30 before an expected sellout crowd at the 12,360-seat Civic Center, and a statewide (and then some) telecast audience.

Neither team has played as well as expected, with the Herd at 5-3 and Mountaineers at 2-3 … not that it will diminish the fervor for this game on the floor and in the stands.

Word on the HERD: Daniel says women’s Capital Classic a teaching tool

Written by JACK BOGACZYK, HI Editor on . Posted in Basketball

HUNTINGTON – Matt Daniel considered the question, albeit only for a few seconds. Asked about the Capital Classic in-state rivalry game with West Virginia, the first-year Marshall women’s basketball coach was succinct.

“It’s not a rivalry … yet,” Daniel said.

The Thundering Herd (4-3), coming off a split in a two-day event for a second straight weekend, face the 25th-ranked Mountaineers (4-2) in a Charleston Civic Center tipoff at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The men’s teams meet the following night at 7:30.

Word on the HERD: Kane turns foul shots into free throws

HUNTINGTON – Finally, Kane was able.

In an unexpected struggle with offensively-challenged UNC Wilmington, Marshall needed what it hadn’t been getting Saturday night at the Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd needed DeAndre Kane to make a free throw … at least one.

With Coach Tom Herrion’s team trailing 58-57 with 21.1 seconds to play, the 5,689 in the hoops house were restless after officials checked the replay monitor and sent Kane to the stripe.

“I just had to knock them down,” Kane said.

Kane’s Free Throws Give Marshall 61-58 Win over UNCW

Written by WOODY WOODRUM, Herd Insider Publisher on . Posted in Basketball

HUNTINGTON — Coach Tom Herrion opened his press conference after the UNCW game, and left no doubt about how he felt about getting the win in another “grinder” for his team.

“We are always thrilled with a win.  And I’ve said it: some of the adversity we’ve hit, and some other things,” said the coach of the Herd, who picked up Marshall’s second win in a row over the Seahawks.

“Nothing is coming easy to this group right now.  And tonight was a perfect example of it.”

Junior guard DeAndre Kane sank two clutch free throws with 21 seconds remaining, then stole the ball on the other end from UNCW’s top scorer on the night, in the plays that completed Marshall’s 61-58 win over UNCW on Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall improved to 5-3 on the season (4-0 at home), while the Seahawks fell to 3-4, 0-4 on the road, but certainly did not go away easy, controlling the tempo and getting a career-best 26 points from Bluefield, W.Va. native Craig Ponder, a sophomore who never had scored more than seven points in his second year with the UNCW program.
