Marshall women’s basketball releases 2012-13 schedule

HUNTINGTON — Marshall women’s basketball will have a new head coach for the first time in 10 years, but will play a non-conference slate including 2011 Patriot League champions Navy, Ohio Valley Conference runner-ups Tennessee Tech, NCAA Tournament participant West Virginia at Charleston in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic and host the Conference USA reigning champs from UTEP as the full women’s basketball schedule was released today.
First year head coach Matt Daniel will face teams in 10 different conferences throughout the beginning of the 2012-13 schedule, including first-time opponents Marquette of the Big East and the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College.
The schedule will preserve long standing rivalries including Ohio (since 1970-71, 41 years ago) at home and West Virginia (40th anniversary of state’s only Division I programs, first meeting in the 1971-72 season) at the Charleston Civic Center and, for the second straight year, on a separate night from the men’s program.
The season begins Nov. 9, as Marshall plays host to 2011-12 Big South semifinalist Radford in the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd then goes on the road for the first time against a team Marshall hasn’t played since Larry Bird was playing there, last meeting the Sycamores of Indiana State.
Marshall returns home to face former Mid-American Conference rival Ball State on Nov. 17 before playing six-straight road games.
The Herd will take on the Jaguars of Southern and the Warriors of Marquette in a tournament hosted by Texas A&M from Nov. 23-25.
Another tournament follows at Eastern Kentucky that includes competition from Jackson State and Presbyterian College on the first day of December.
The month of December will include some of Marshall’s toughest non-conference foes including the Capital Classic versus West Virginia on Dec. 4.
The Herd will then return to Huntington for its first home game in a month against Ohio on Dec. 15 and then play two other home games against former Southern Conference rival Furman and Women’s Basketball Invitational participant Tennessee Tech on Dec. 22.
Marshall will close out the non-conference schedule with 2011-12 Patriot League champions, Navy on Dec. 30.
After an 11-day break, the Herd will start Conference USA play on Jan. 10 with a road trip to Southern Miss.
Marshall will then host NIT participant Tulane three days later.
Following a trip to Tulsa on Jan. 17, the Herd will play at home against Houston and UAB before traveling to East Carolina on Jan. 31.
February will open up Memphis at home on Feb. 3.
After a weekend road trip that includes UCF and SMU, Marshall will host reigning C-USA champions UTEP on Feb. 14.
The Herd will then play UAB for the second time on Feb. 17 and travel to Rice for a game on the 24, back home for Southern Miss on Feb. 28 and Marshall will play its final home game against UCF on March 3.
The Herd will close the season with an away contest against Memphis, before preparing for the Conference USA Championships, held March 13-16 in Tulsa, Okla., held concurrent with the men's tournament at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
